Empowering Indigenous communities through Colour

Our story
Jiga Jiga Paint is a first-of-its-kind national Supply Nation registered Indigenous brand supplying APAS-certified high-performance architectural and decorative paint products across Australia designed for use by professional applicators and home renovators. In the spirit of reconciliation, our products are carefully selected and manufactured in partnership with Haymes Paint.
Jiga Jiga Paint was created by Bevan Mailman and Tom Hutcheson who have extensive combined experience in commercial painting and community economic development. Both men had a desire to develop a paint brand and range of colours that celebrated First Nations ancient cultures and traditions and created employment and business opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
The last piece of the puzzle was a meeting with the Haymes family who have been market leaders in paint manufacturing and supply since 1935.
The formation of Jiga Jiga paint is something that the Haymes family are incredibly proud of. It continues to build upon the late David Haymes’ legacy of making a positive impact on Australian communities. As Matt and Tim Haymes acknowledge, “Dad would love that we are part of this exciting, first-of-its-kind Indigenous paint brand, partnering with like-minded people wanting to make a real difference”.

Tim Haymes
Director
Tim Haymes is the Commercial Sales and Strategy Director at Haymes Paint. He hails from a family whose name has become synonymous with paint and today works alongside his siblings, Matt and Belinda, and brother-in-law, Rod Walton – all third generation of the iconic business their grandfather founded in 1935.
In recent years Tim has worked closely with Haymes Paints’ stores and sales teams around Australia and overseas, fostering customer relationships and growing new opportunities – especially in Japan where he has spent considerable time. He leads innovation across the company with a focus on product, service, systems, and support.
Having grown up in the family business, Tim remembers stacking shelves and dusting paint cans in the company’s Ballarat store and playing hide and seek in the warehouse with his brother Matt, before he was old enough to work there during school holidays. More recently, Tim has led the major expansion of that same manufacturing site.

Matt Haymes
Director
Matt Haymes is no stranger to paint, having grown up around the Ballarat headquarters of his family’s iconic Australian paint brand. Today, he continues his family’s legacy now in its third generation, working in the day-to-day operations as a Director of Haymes Paint.
Like his father before him, Matt has been immersed in the paint business from an early age. Together with his brother Tim, he has fond memories of “working” in Ballarat’s original Haymes factory during the school holidays as a youngster.
This unique childhood proved to be an invaluable opportunity for Matt, Tim and sister Belinda to learn decades of knowledge and experience from within the family business. Today, Matt is involved in running Haymes Paint alongside his brother Tim Haymes, sister Belinda Haymes and brother-in-law Rod Walton, out of the company’s Headquarters in Ballarat. Collectively, they’ve learnt so much growing their family business to be an internationally renowned company, as both colleagues and siblings.
Having experienced the triumphs and hardships of running a family-owned business firsthand, Matt understands the importance of supporting other Australian owned and operated family businesses.
Meet Jiga Jiga, the Willie Wag Tail
Jiga Jiga is one of the names for the Willie Wag Tail given by the Bidjara people of Central West Queensland. Certain groups believe that the Willie Wag Tail is a messenger bird and, like the ancient paintings found throughout Australia, can bring a message or leave one for future generations.
